Riding & Experience
Choosing the right expedition starts with understanding the riding requirements. Every route in the Himalayas is different, and we want every rider to have the best possible experience.
Do I need riding experience?
Yes. Every Trans-Himalayan Odyssey expedition takes place in the high-altitude Himalayas, with routes climbing above 4,000 metres. You'll be riding on winding mountain roads, changing surfaces, gravel sections and high mountain passes, so previous motorcycle riding experience is essential.
The level of experience required depends on the expedition you choose.
High Pass Sampler
Perfect for riders who already have experience riding motorcycles and ideally some previous mountain or adventure riding experience. It's an excellent introduction to Himalayan riding without the demands of a longer expedition.
Ladakh Unbound
This week-long expedition crosses several challenging mountain passes. Riders should be confident handling a motorcycle on varying road surfaces and be physically and mentally prepared for extended days at altitude.
Beyond the Passes
Our ultimate 14-day expedition. Expect long riding days, remote terrain and altitudes approaching 6,000 metres. This journey is recommended only for experienced adventure riders who are physically fit and ready for a genuine Himalayan challenge.
If you're still gaining confidence on a motorcycle or have never ridden mountain roads before, we recommend building your experience before joining one of our Himalayan expeditions. You'll enjoy the journey far more when you can focus on the scenery instead of learning to ride.
Can beginners join?
Our expeditions are not designed for complete beginners.
Because we spend much of our time riding above 4,000 metres through mountain passes, remote valleys and changing road conditions, riders should already be comfortable controlling a motorcycle in real-world traffic and ideally have some experience riding in mountainous terrain.

What motorcycle will I ride?
We work with a carefully selected fleet of adventure motorcycles chosen specifically for the demanding roads of the Indian Himalayas.
The motorcycle you receive depends on your chosen package, availability and riding preference.
Royal Enfield Himalayan
The most popular option for Himalayan touring thanks to its comfort, simplicity and proven reliability at altitude.
KTM Adventure
Ideal for riders looking for a lighter, more performance-oriented adventure motorcycle.
BMW GS Adventure
Available on selected departures and packages for riders seeking a premium long-distance adventure motorcycle.
Every motorcycle is professionally serviced, inspected and prepared before departure to ensure it's ready for the unique demands of Himalayan riding.
Can I bring a passenger?
Yes. Passengers are welcome on selected expeditions.
When the group consists of more than four riders, a support vehicle transports the group's luggage, allowing passengers to ride comfortably without carrying expedition bags on the motorcycle.
If you're planning to travel with a passenger, let us know during the booking process so we can recommend the most suitable motorcycle and seating arrangement.
Our goal is to ensure both rider and passenger enjoy the journey. We'll advise you on luggage, seating and motorcycle options before your expedition begins.
Safety & Insurance
Your safety is our highest priority. Here's everything you need to know about insurance, motorcycle protection, permits and how we handle unexpected situations during the expedition.
Is fuel included?
Yes. Fuel is fully included throughout your expedition.
There are no additional fuel charges during the ride. We take care of fuel planning so you can simply enjoy the journey without worrying about distances between fuel stations in remote Himalayan regions.
Fuel for the entire expedition is included in your tour price.
What happens if I drop the motorcycle?
Don't worry—dropping a motorcycle is more common than many riders expect, especially when riding off-road or on loose mountain surfaces.
If you've chosen our optional Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), accidental damage such as scratches, broken panels or other repairable damage is covered according to the terms of the package.
If you haven't chosen the CDW, repair costs for accidental damage will be deducted from your refundable motorcycle security deposit (€200 / ₹18,000), with any remaining balance returned after the motorcycle inspection.
Our goal isn't to look for reasons to charge riders. Adventure riding sometimes involves minor mishaps, and we'll always assess damage fairly and transparently.
What happens if I get altitude sickness?
Every rider reacts differently to high altitude, which is why we take acclimatisation seriously throughout the expedition.
Our guides continuously monitor riders and carry pulse oximeters to check blood oxygen levels whenever necessary.
Pulse Oximeter
We regularly monitor oxygen saturation whenever a rider feels unwell or shows symptoms of altitude sickness.
Emergency Oxygen
Oxygen cylinders are carried throughout the expedition and are available whenever required.
Flexible Schedule
If necessary, we'll take longer breaks, adjust the day's ride or even add an additional acclimatisation day if conditions allow.
Hospital Assistance
If symptoms become serious, we'll immediately arrange transport to the nearest appropriate medical facility.
Reaching the destination is never more important than your health. Our guides will always make decisions based on the wellbeing of the entire group.
Do I need permits?
Yes. Many of Ladakh's most spectacular destinations require government-issued Inner Line Permits.
The good news is that you don't need to arrange any of them yourself.
The Trans-Himalayan Odyssey team handles all permit applications before the expedition begins. Your permits will be ready and handed to you during the pre-ride briefing in Leh.
Simply send us the requested passport and visa information before your arrival—we'll take care of the paperwork.
Can I rent riding gear?
Yes.
If you've selected riding gear as part of your expedition package, your equipment will be professionally fitted and handed over before the first riding day.
If riding gear isn't included in your booking, you're welcome to bring your own protective equipment.

Travel & Expedition Logistics
Preparing for a Himalayan motorcycle expedition is slightly different from an ordinary holiday. Here are the practical details to help you plan your adventure with confidence.
How cold does it get?
The weather in Ladakh changes considerably throughout our riding season, which typically runs from mid-February until the end of September.
Early and late in the season are naturally colder, particularly when camping or staying close to the high mountain passes.
Comfortable Riding
Most riding days offer pleasant temperatures, although conditions vary depending on altitude and weather.
Very Cold
During poor weather or overnight stays near the highest passes, temperatures may fall to around -10°C to -15°C.
Layering Matters
We recommend dressing in layers so you can comfortably adapt to changing temperatures throughout the day.

It's not unusual to experience sunshine, rain, wind and even snowfall on the same riding day. Good riding gear makes a huge difference.
Is there Wi-Fi or mobile network coverage?
Most hotels and guesthouses offer Wi-Fi, but once we head into the mountains you should expect limited or no internet connectivity for parts of the expedition.
When booking your expedition, you'll have the option to request a local SIM card to help you stay connected whenever network coverage is available.

Remote Mountains
Some valleys and mountain passes have little or no mobile signal regardless of your network provider.
Many riders discover that being away from constant notifications becomes one of the most memorable parts of the Himalayan experience.
Can I charge my camera, phone or other devices?
Yes.
Every motorcycle is equipped with a charging point so you can charge your phone, camera or navigation devices while riding.
We also carry emergency charging solutions should you unexpectedly run low on battery during the expedition.
USB Charging
Charge your devices while riding using the motorcycle's charging point.
Emergency Power
Our support team carries additional charging options whenever possible.
Whether you're carrying a phone, GoPro, DSLR or drone, we'll do our best to help keep your equipment powered throughout the journey.
How much luggage can I bring?
We recommend travelling light. A lighter motorcycle is easier to handle, especially on mountain roads and rough terrain.
Once your booking is confirmed, you'll receive a detailed packing checklist explaining exactly what to bring and what we'll provide.
Pack Smart
Bring only what you genuinely need. Quality clothing is far more valuable than large amounts of luggage.
Larger Groups
For groups with a luggage support vehicle, your larger bags can travel separately, leaving your motorcycle lighter and easier to ride.
After booking, you'll receive our Rider Information Guide with recommended clothing, luggage suggestions and essential equipment for your expedition.
What currency should I carry?
The local currency throughout Ladakh is the Indian Rupee (₹).
If you're travelling from within India, most towns accept digital payments through UPI, mobile banking and card payments where available.
If you're travelling internationally, we recommend carrying a reasonable amount of Indian currency for remote areas where digital payments may not always be available.
Digital Payments
UPI and mobile banking are widely accepted in many places, although availability becomes limited in remote regions.
Cash Is Helpful
We recommend exchanging or withdrawing some Indian Rupees before heading into remote mountain regions.
Many international travellers use services such as Wise for travel-related payments before arriving in India. During the expedition itself, carrying some Indian Rupees is the safest and most practical option.

Your adventure doesn't begin when you arrive in Leh—it begins the moment your booking is confirmed. We want you to feel completely prepared long before you land in the Himalayas.

Once your booking has been confirmed, we'll begin preparing everything needed for your Himalayan adventure. You'll receive regular communication from our team along with a comprehensive Rider Information Guide to help you prepare with confidence.

Will there be a briefing before the expedition?
Absolutely.
Before we begin riding, everyone joins a comprehensive expedition briefing in Leh. This is your opportunity to meet the team, become familiar with your motorcycle and understand the journey ahead.

Will I know the daily riding plan?
Yes.
Every riding day begins with a short briefing covering the day's destination, expected riding conditions, weather forecast, fuel stops, meal breaks and any sections that require extra attention.
Because mountain conditions can change quickly, we may adjust the route whenever necessary to prioritise rider safety and make the most of the day's conditions.
The Himalayas reward patience. Every day's plan is designed to balance adventure, safety and enjoyment rather than simply covering the greatest possible distance.
Professional Ride Coverage
Some adventures deserve more than a few mobile phone photos. If you'd rather stay focused on the ride while someone else captures the memories, we've got you covered.
Can someone professionally photograph our expedition?
Yes.
During the booking process, you can add our optional Professional Ride Coverage to your expedition.
A dedicated photographer and videographer will accompany the group, capturing the journey from start to finish while you concentrate on enjoying the ride.
